Centuries of playtime

It's fascinating to think that some of these popular old-fashioned games have their origins way back in history.

Hopscotch may have been played by children and soldiers alike back in Roman times, that’s 2,000 years ago. A game called ‘scotch hop’ or ‘scotch hoppers’, which sounds very similar to the modern game of hopscotch in how it was played, is referenced in 17^th century writing too.

Snakes and ladders originated in ancient India and was brought to the UK at the end of the 19^th century.

‘Duck duck, goose’, or more accurately ‘duck duck, grey duck’, originated in Sweden but was spread widely around the world by Swedish settlers in the 18^th and 19^th centuries.

Clearly, despite the passing of time and the arrival of modern technology, children still enjoy the same type of games, hundreds of years later.

A learning experience

Of course, putting markings on the ground can turn playtime into a learning experience too, with the creation of a giant clock so children can practise telling the time, or perhaps a huge compass, which will help little ones learn their north from their south, east or west!
